Penalty Shooters 2 gives you both halves of the duel: you take the penalties, and you face them. Attacking is all about the aim - pick your spot with the mouse or a finger and hope the keeper goes the wrong way - and when it is your turn in goal you choose which way to dive and then live with the answer.

The competition is a proper cup rather than a single shootout. Pick from 360 teams across 12 leagues, from the World Cup and the European Championship to England, Germany and Spain, and you start in the group stage: finish first or second in your group or the run ends there. Survive that and the knockout rounds begin, where one miss is the difference between going through and going home.

It runs in your browser with nothing to download, in landscape, and the controls are a single tap either way, so a phone is as good as a desktop.

Tips for a nervy shootout

• Vary where you put it. A keeper who has watched you go left twice is already leaning left.
• Aim to score, not to be clever. A penalty placed just inside the post goes in; one aimed at the very corner does not always.
• Mind the group stage. Only the top two teams go through, so a point dropped early can end the run before the knockouts even start.
• In goal, commit. You are picking a side and living with it - a hesitant dive saves nothing.
